Minato's is a very different sushi experience. If you expect a fancy place, attentive waiters or romantic atmosphere, go somewhere else. They have rules and do's & dont's stuck everywhere on the walls, the whole table has to order at the same time, and the waiters/owner can be quite rude. If you can look past all that, you will have the most amazing, gob-stopping sushi in Cape Town. The size of everything makes most people giggle in disbelief at first, so be careful how much you order!
I can recommend most of the menu as I love it all (except the tofu, but that is probably not their fault!). I especially love the Alaska Rolls and the Tempura of any description, and their soups are legendary!
The owner will happily entertain you with his fame (he appeared in the Douglas Green ads a few years ago, and still play the ads on the in-house TVs), so if you want to score points with him, tell him how u loved the ads! :) enjoy!
If you go to Minato, you HAVE to have the Original Special. It's salmon and tuna and avo tempuraed into 8 crispy rolls of fleshy goodness. It's also a good way to eat sushi without having to deal with a heavy rice belly. Heavy rice bellies always get in the way of, well, the rest of the evening. So eat the Original Special when you want to go dancing afterwards.
