Robben Island

With its inspiring historical relevance here in South Africa, this small rocky island lies in Table Bay about 12km north east of Cape Town. It was declared a World Heritage site in 1999. Nelson Mandela and his contemporaries were imprisoned there and while they were on Robben island, the prisoners called it Nelson Mandela University or Robben Island University because they had committed themselves to freedom and self-development in spite of their incarceration. It is truly a testimony to the strength of the human spirit, not to mention the superbly scenic boat trip to the island itself! A popular destination for tourists and if you’re a local, why not rediscover the spirit and enjoy a sunny, educative day out on the ocean?Oh and did I mention that you’ll spot a few cute penguins along the way? ;) So awesome. See website for more info regarding the boat trip and museum.
